My Linh Hoang AS media evaluation


Thrillers are characterized by fast pacing, frequent action, and consist of villains and heroes. A successful thriller story must contain suspense, red herrings and cliffhangers, without these literacy devices the thriller movie will not be successful and would be very dull and not as interesting to watch.

To help me and my fellow group mates to develop ideas for our thriller, as a whole class our teachers showed us some thriller movie such as: “The Flight Plan” “What Lies Beneath” and some small clips of the last year’s As thriller. This has helped us as it has shown us a lot of variety of areas we can choose from; different camera techniques.

In ‘What Lies Beneath’ we was showed the bathtub scene where the editor uses emphasized sound really well because they only used loud mysterious sound e.g. when she was taking out the plug and her screaming was very high pitch.


“The Flight Plan” was a very successful thriller as it include many cliff-hanging moments, the used of camera angle was good as they make the thriller look real and the music that was edited made it more interesting to watch; keeping the audience on the edge of their seats.
For the opening scene of the thriller we used the establishing shot to establish the friendship of the two main characters, which is totally opposite what a professional director would do to his/her film. This will challenge the forms and conventions of a real media products as it will be more interesting to the audience as they have never seen a movie like this before, where the movie start of with an establishing shot which establish the friendship of the main characters.
My media product does raise questions like the first scene where we established the friendship of the characters; this would make the audience question themselves, “what does the friendship shown on the screen got to do with the story?”

In my thriller story the typical social group that is aimed at is people from 15 years onward who are interested in a story lines that have so much suspense, and is thrilling.
This social group will be interested to watch the thriller as the characters that are in the movie are based on teenagers and young adults of different types of background, therefore it would make it easier for them to relate themselves to these characters.
For examples, the people that star in the movie are British Asians. Therefore, it will help to lure in many Asians watchers because the story line of the movie is base on teenager’s life, it has realistic dramatic story to it; the characters’ personality will be some what like a normal teenagers; they like to mess about, have fun and enjoy there life, this sometimes lead to trouble. In the media product, you will witness two friends messing about and having fun, however I wanted to take the “taking revenge” to the extreme, plotting a twist to the story where something has gone wrong in the relationship leaving one of them to come back for revenge.
From a parents prospective, from watching this movie they would be expanding more on parenting skills and would be more aware of their children’s safety, this would then give them the opportunity to have a sit down with their kids and talk about the dangers that they could face

The film company that I would distribute my product will be Paramount Film Company, because it is a very big company. Therefore, this will help my movie to sell better, because it is popular and have a high standard of viewing audiences as paramount have made award winning films such as “Godfather”, “Indiana Jones”, “Titanic”, “Transformers”, “Mission Impossible”, “Forrest Gump” to name a few; all of these film mention above have been distributed by paramount.
Paramount Film Company will be interested in distributing in my product because it has a strong story line, and have the potential to win awards and Oscars.

To successfully attract the target audience, I had to make sure that my story line is interested and thrilling with characters that would enable them to relate back to and to help them think through about where they like to end up and what they like to become in future. To be able to do these I have to find out what interest the audience, what is happening around the world, and match my movie to a real life issues or problems; making the movie dramatic with different types of emotion involved. We presented it by using slow music to add emotion while having image flask-backs to establish the friendship between the two characters. In one of the film where the character played by Samah Ibtes she was looking at the mirror while rubbing out the writing on it, we have slow motion it so that the audience can capture what was written. At the very last scene where some one kidnapped Samah was originally from a Taiwanese drama called “The Clue Collector” we thought it was a good idea to add this into the movie as it will raise who the kidnapper is and why did he/she kidnapped Samah.

After finishing the product I have present it to a sample of my target audiences to see what they thought of it. These feed back were that, it did raise up some questions, it look mysterious, the used of sound was very good as it set the tone to the film, however, the sound was a bit off as it was to loud. The establishing shot was well presented as it set the storyline right from the start. The media product is successful at reaching my target audiences as the movie appeal to them; catching their interest and high demand on movie, as well as having small trailer on website such as “www.youtube.com” to gain more audiences.
To attract our target audiences we would used media techniques and freebies to intensify our film’s interest and appeal; we could sell merchandise such as:
• Excitement
• Action packed
• Bags
• Posters
We could have billboards around London, TV commercial, magazines to name a few; to attract their attention; informing them that there will be a new movie coming out very soon to the big screen.
Primary and secondary schools have been so attach to the movie, that they have started changing school rules and regulations. The government has been so wary of this film that they have injected funds into schools to upgrade security, safer facilities, more staff and more protection for the children.

Through out the years, technology has improved, now days there are lot of equipment used when filming a film; which are the key features towards developing an entirely successful movie. In the media products, due to the shortage of professional equipment, only the camera, tripod, and lighting kit to name a few, was available to use. The cameras helped to get footage, tripod help to capture a still or straight image or footage as well as holding the camera at a specific angle without any movement or shaking.
Using final cut pro was very hard but useful as it helps to add adjust and add special effects to create suspense creating a great movie. However, I found this process hard, as I have never used it to an extreme. Editing the film was a very long process as you have to log and capture the footage you have filmed, and then have to cut and edit it into a smooth footage that matches with each other making the shot were shot impeccably. It is extremely important to do this it will ensure that this movie would be a huge success.
In contrast, I have learnt how to use different media equipment, expanding on my knowledge of the variety of camera angles to make a movie look more interesting and how to use final cut pro when editing a product.
The limitations of this process are that we have to plan our storyline, film it edit it, in such a small amount of time. The “blog” part of the process was a bit too long, as we have to write out the film plan, and keep note of what my group and I did each time we filmed and what we filmed that day.

In conclusion, making a film is a very hard job to do, as you always have to have a specific idea in mind of what genre would the target audience prefer and how would you make it successful, you have to have the perfect storyboard and planning to create a dramatic and interesting movie. Producing a movie, come with a lot of concentration, patient, good imagination and creativity.
If I were given another opportunity to produce another thriller movie, I would use more camera shot, better sound track with a better planning than the one I had for this thriller, as it will help me to speed up the filming process. Other then that I am very happy with my product as it came out better than I expected.

In today's lesson we had a group viewing with the class; we watched wach other's thrille movie and gave feedback to each other, so that we could go off and write an evaluation for it.

In conclusion, we thought that it would be better if we should only have two “mise en scene”. Therefore; we had to re-plan our "thriller" and decided to keep the filming that we done at my house and film once more at the college as our new mise en scene to fit in with the new story line.After all of the filming, we had to "log and capture" the clips and edited it using "Mac" computer. In this process, we found it very hard and difficult to do as we have never use the "Mac" computer to this extent, so it was a whole new experience for all of us.Friday 27th February 2009Today was a very stressful day for our group as we were behind from every one in the class. We had to arrange our clips into orders, add sound effect to it, title/credit to the film and add effect to it. We were worrying about not finishing it in time for the deadline at 3pm. However, we have got it together and worked as a group all the way through and managed to finish before the deadline. We were very happy and proud of yourself for finishing it on time.

An over-view of the thriller.

An over-view of the thriller.
The thriller is called Her Revenge; the story is about a two best friends and one of the friends had been murdered. We used flashbacks to establish the friendship. One of the girls gets a phone call while she is at home. The next shot if a cut away shot of her washing her face and the a flash back moment of when she was with her friend, she then looks up at the mirror and she sees writing on it and suddenly gets scared and runs out. She is then kidnapped by some one but the audience do not know who it is.

Final production

For the past week, my group have been stuck in the editing room adding the final touches to our thriller. After sacrificing our free periods, lunch and break times and also after school...we finally finished our thriller. Throughout the whole of this coursework, the most difficult part of it for me was the editing. It took some time to get use to the Mac computers as it is very different from normal PC’s. Throughout the week we had to log and capture all the clips that we made edited them down by making them shorter so that it would fit with the time limit of 2 minutes. We made a few match cuts and also added in effects which included: flash backs, black and white features and also having the clips dissolve into each other. After sorting out the clips and making sure that the order of the clips is correct we decided to create the credits to go with the thriller. We used live type to type up all the credits and live type also allowed us to have added fonts and also effects onto the writing. The effects that I added to the credits created a spooky and chilling atmosphere. After adding all the credits to the main sequence, we had to make the sound. We used soundtrack pro to cerate the music. We combined three different tracks and created out own music. Making the pitch higher when needed to and lowering the pitch need required. Friday was our deadline and we managed to finish our thriller on time! Overall my group and I were very proud of the final production and we believe that we have successfully created a good thriller opening.

Today was a very stressful day for our group as we were behind from every one in the class. We had to arrange our clips into orders, add sound effect to it, title/credit to the film and add effect to it. We were worrying about not finishing it in time for the deadline at 3pm. However, we have got it together and worked as a group all the way through and managed to finish before the deadline. We were very happy and proud of yourself for finishing it on time.

Editing prt1

Today me and my group have started to edit our film. We started off logging and capturing each part of the film and started to format it and place it in order.
As we did so, we realized that we were missing some footage and forgot to film specific parts of the film such as the front shot of me walking in the corridor.

So Rifath (Mylinh had a lesson) did a medium shot of me walking down the corridor- having just left the toilet.

We both decided to do another shot of me washing my face in the toilet. We did a medium close up shot of me washing my face and as I turned to look up at the mirror, Rifath panned the camera up as I looked up to the mirror.

While editing, we finished our logging and capturing we started to add the credits and we decided to call our film "Her Revenge".

Tuesday 24 February 2009

Today we filmed in college, where Samah will see the writing on the mirror and will get a phone call. She will then be kidnapped. We used a variety of angles and shots. We did a lot of longs shots of Samah walking into the toilet and then have a match cut of her being inside the toilet. We filmed mostly over the shoulder, showing Samah washing her face and looking up at the mirror to see the writing. We then filmed close up of Samah’s facial reaction. We used medium shots to do this. The next shots we did were of Samah walking through the corridor at a fast pace, from her point of view and also from over the shoulder. The next clip was of somebody grabbing samah and taking her away. He would want to end with a shot of her bag falling on the floor and then everything goes black.
We filmed at MyLinh’s house and had a slight change to the idea. During this filming we used a lot of over the shoulder shots and close up of Samah’s showing her scared expressions. We tried the idea of using MSN, where someone adds Samah (who she thinks is her dead friend MyLinh), that did not go to plan because it was difficult to portray that idea and show it on screen. We then decided to film Samah looking at images of both of them as friends and then she gets a phone call and her expression suddenly becomes of fright and scare. We used a lot of over the shoulder shots from a medium angle.

The next filming will be on Wednesday 11th March in college

Filming the Room Scene

We filmed the beginning scene of the film where my character gets mysterious calls from her 'dead' best friend.
We did a medium shot from behind my back where I am writing on my notepad as this is something a teenager would be doing.
As I picked up the phone, we moved the camera to do a close up of my face as we wanted the audience to focus on my shocked facial expression.
We also did a close shot of the computer screen where there is a picture of me and my friend this is emphasize how close my character was with her friend.

Lesson dated 6th February 2009

During this session, we decided to go and film at Stoke Newington graveyard. Due to the snowy weather not everything went to plan. However we managed to get a few shots. We filmed a lot of shots from Samah’s point of view. We also did a long shot of when Samah was walking into the grave yard and also used panning to create an eerie atmosphere.

Filming in the graveyard

Today, we have decided to use our 3 hours media lesson filming in the graveyard at Stoke Newington.
This was supposed to be the part where my character visits her dead friends' graveyard, but then starts to hear voices and turns round, thinking she's seeing her.

Rifath and Mylinh were the ones who were mainly doing the camerawork as I was portraying the character.
We used a long shot while I was walking to the grave to establish the setting also to show the audience that my character regularly visits this grave.
Mylinh did a panning shot from down to up as i was walking to the grave so the footsteps were shown to symbolize that the atmosphere was eerie.

Lesson dated Wednesday February 4th 2009

Today we supposed to film at the graveyard but due to weather conditions we were unable to film there. Instead we filmed at MyLinh’s house; this is the first part of our thriller, when Samah is getting ready to leave the house. In this part of the thriller we are establishing the friendship between the two. Also in this scene to add an element of thriller, we also filmed Samah thinking that she saw MyLinh, this will make the audience wonder who that girl was and why was she being imagined. This will automatically raise questions for the audience and create a thrilling mood. I did a lot of close ups and over the shoulder shots. Also we have tried to film shots that may help when we will want to do match cutting for the final. Our next filming will be on Friday 6th February 2009 at Stoke Newington Graveyard.

Unable to film

Due to bad weather conditions we were unable to film on Tuesday at MyLinh's house; therefore we will be filming at her house next week Tuesday. For tomorrows shooting we will be filming in Stoke Newington graveyard, that is if the weather allows us to film there.

Wednesday 28th January 2009 & Friday 30th January 2009

My group and I started filming on Wednesday. We went to Finsbury park and did a few shots their. This is the scene where Samah sees her “dead” friend MyLinh. We did some long shots and a lot of over the shoulder shots from Samah’s perspective. On Wednesday the weather was rainy and it our shooting didn’t go according to plan, but we did manage to get quite a few good shots. We returned to Finsbury Park on Friday and we did a few more shots. After filming in Finsbury park we realised that we may not want to use the shots we shot at Finsbury park, however we have closed the option completely on whether to use the shots we took or not. Also in case we did use those shots we decided to wrap the ending of the thriller. This included filming with hand held camera work. I had to go around Samah, while she thinks that she keeps on hearing MyLinh whispering her name. we did not use the tripod as much because we saw that hand held camera was easier and provided a thrilling effect. Our next location to film will be at MyLinh’s house on Tuesday 3rd February.

Filming the park scene- Samah Ibtes

For the second time, me, Rifath and Mylinh went to the park scene to film me walking out of the graveyard where my character keeps seeing glances of her 'dead' friend.
The weather was cold and below freezing point which made it difficult for us to film our scene, hand held in which we managed to do so anyway.
We have finished now filming the park scene.

Pitching lesson -Dated 23/01/09

Lesson dated 23-01-09:

During this lesson we were given a pitching activity to do, in which we had to present our idea to the class and our teacher. Our original idea was of two best friends, (played by: Samah and MyLinh) in which MyLinh has been found murdered at a church site. One normal day, Samah thinks she sees MyLinh (who is supposedly dead) in which she beings to follow this girl until she is taken to the church site where MyLynh was found one of the girls has been murdered. We had to change our idea slightly, because our original idea was too long and it would not have fitted into 2 minutes.

For our idea we still stayed in the theme of best fiends and murder. Our new idea will establish three main themes: it will firstly establish the friendship between the two characters this will be done in an ordinary setting of a home. We will establish friendship through photographs of the two friends.

We will then establish the death of MyLynh; this will be done in the setting of a graveyard where Samah will go to visit MyLynh’s grave. We will then use flashaback images of newspaper articles and photographs to show that she is dead.

The final establishment will be to create a surreal feeling and leave the audience to wonder whether or not MyLynh is really dead. Here we will use shots that will help create tension and uneasy feelings, making the audience want to continue watching on.

We will start filming from Wednesday 28th January 2008.

evaluation of previous AS student clips

The clips that we watched today were openings of thriller films created by previous AS media students. We watched five videos, all based on thriller. However each of them had a different approach on how to portray a thriller.

All the clips used a variety of different camera shots and angles, which added an impact on the thriller theme.

I realised that in all the clips, the use of music was very strong and this had a great effect when it came to portray a thriller theme. The music too the first clip was very well presented as it helped build a susceptive mood allowing questions to arise in the audiences minds. Another clip also contained very strong music which had a chilling effect on the audience as it also fit in with the setting of the clip; which was of a graveyard. I also think that a lot of the editing was good as there were very good cuts which all flowed in with each shot. Also the type set used for most of the clips were also very good and they strongly fit into the theme of the thriller. Finally, I also realised that transitions made in the clips were very effective as it made the clip flow well and look very professional.

I think that the role of planning played a very important part in the production. By planning it makes it a lot easier to film as everyone will be aware of what ti do. Also by having the clip structured out, the production of the film will be able to flow well.

I think my group will try to avoid using too many transitions and make sure that we do not repeat shots.
